Our ELD Department Mission
The CAVA English Language Development (ELD) Department serves our English language learner community through instruction and support in an inclusive environment to develop confident students who are equipped with the skills to have individual success in school and in life.
Our ELD Department Vision
The CAVA English Language Development (ELD) Department will increase English proficiency of English Learners (ELs) and support ELs in meeting academic achievement standards by providing high quality, effective language instructional programs.

Our ELD Department Goals
- Ensure that English learners acquire full proficiency in English as rapidly and effectively as possible and attain parity with native speakers of English.
-
Ensure that English learners, within a reasonable period of time, achieve the same rigorous grade-level academic standards that are expected of all students.
In order to accomplish these goals, all English learners are provided with Designated AND Integrated English language Development (ELD) instruction targeted to their English proficiency level.

Designated ELD:
The teaching of language during a protected time within the school day. The focus is on acquiring English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking using the ELD standards at each student’s instructional proficiency level.
Language is a structured communication system that is comprised of phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, and semantics, as used in all academic and social contexts. Our team of ELD Specialists are experts in the explicit teaching of these aspects of language.

Integrated ELD:
The teaching of language development and literacy throughout the entire day and across all subject areas. The focus is on accessing and learning content standards. During Integrated ELD, the content standards are the primary standards used for instruction. ELD standards are used in tandem to meet the language demands of English learners in all content area instruction.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD) CLASSES
The ELD department provides online classes instructing English Learning students in TK-12th grades with lessons that target the appropriate ELD standards (see link below for the ELD standards and descriptions for California).

Classes are small group and goal-based, and attendance is required. English learning students are placed into groups of common areas of need based on ELPAC and STAR 360 assessment results.
